Sailfish

Istiophorus platypterus

Nov–Mar Peak World-Class

πŸ“ Where to Find Them

  • β€’ The Gulf Stream just 1–4 miles offshore β€” closer here than almost anywhere
  • β€’ Inlet mouths β€” Lake Worth Inlet and Jupiter Inlet during migrations
  • β€’ Weed lines and temperature breaks on the Gulf Stream edge
  • β€’ The "sailfish highway" between Palm Beach and Jupiter in 80–300ft
  • β€’ Kite fishing grounds north of the Palm Beach Inlet in winter

πŸ“… Best Times

Palm Beach is widely regarded as the best sailfish fishing destination in the Atlantic β€” and arguably in the world. The Gulf Stream runs just 1–2 miles offshore in winter, concentrating sailfish in numbers that would seem impossible anywhere else. November through March brings the heaviest migration; cold fronts push massive pods of fish through. A single boat releasing 10 sailfish in one day is not exceptional here.

⚠️ Regulations

Atlantic sailfish: catch-and-release only β€” no harvest. Use circle hooks to maximize release survival. Electric reels and kite fishing are popular local techniques. Verify current FWC rules.

🎣 Best Baits & Lures

  • β€’ Live pilchards (scaled sardines) kite-fished on the surface β€” the #1 technique
  • β€’ Live goggle-eyes β€” the premium bait for larger fish
  • β€’ Ballyhoo under a skirt trolled along color changes
  • β€’ Bridled live bait slow-trolled in the Gulf Stream
  • β€’ Kite spreads with 2–4 live baits at different depths

🎯 Tackle Setup

20–30lb class spinning or conventional. 50lb braid. 80lb fluorocarbon leader 6–8ft. Kite fishing is the local technique that sets Palm Beach apart β€” it keeps live baits skipping on the surface, triggering explosive strikes. Use a quality kite reel and a fighting reel combo. Have multiple outfits rigged and ready β€” when sailfish are biting, the bite moves fast.

πŸ›’ Recommended Gear for Sailfish

Top Pick

Live liner reel for kite and live-bait sailfish. The live liner lets a sailfish take the bait without feeling drag resistance β€” then engage and fight. Fully sealed against Palm Beach's salty conditions.

Mustad Demon Circle Hook 5/0 Wide Gap β€” 25pk

Circle hooks for sailfish are the responsible standard. Wide-gap 5/0 is perfect for pilchards and goggle-eyes. Near-perfect release survival β€” hooks almost always catch the corner of the jaw.

Seaguar Blue Label Fluorocarbon 80lb β€” 25yd

Clear, abrasion-resistant fluorocarbon for sailfish leaders. The Gulf Stream is crystal clear β€” heavy fluoro stays invisible while providing the strength to survive a jumping sailfish.

🎯 Tackle Setup

Heavy conventional trolling gear: 50–80lb class. 80lb mono or braid. Wire leader (single strand or 7x7 cable) β€” wahoo teeth slice through everything else. Use 6–9ft of wire ahead of your bait. The initial run from a wahoo will peel 200+ yards in seconds β€” make sure drags are set properly before deploying lures.

πŸ›’ Recommended Gear for Wahoo

The best fishing is on the incoming tide, when permit push through the bridge opening to feed on crabs and shrimp on the flats. Early morning and late afternoon are most productive. Spring and fall see the heaviest concentrations.

Permit are notoriously difficult β€” keep trying.

πŸ›’ Recommended Gear for Permit

Sight-Fishing Favorite

Sensitive, lightweight spinning rod for sight-fishing permit at Blue Heron Bridge. Enough backbone to fight a 20lb permit but sensitive enough to present a live crab on a light jig head.

Permit at Blue Heron Bridge demand finesse. The Avid's sensitivity catches more fish.

Shimano Vanford 3000 Spinning Reel

Ultra-lightweight spinning reel with a silky smooth drag for permit fishing at Blue Heron Bridge. The smooth drag is critical β€” permit make sharp, powerful turns and a jerky drag will cost you fish.

A smooth drag is everything in permit fishing. The Vanford is exceptional.

Fiddler Crab Trap β€” Collapsible Wire

Must Have

Catch fresh fiddler crabs from the Lake Worth Lagoon flats. Fresh fiddlers hooked lightly through the carapace are the most irresistible bait you can put in front of a Blue Heron Bridge permit.

Fresh fiddler crabs are the #1 permit bait. Catching your own makes them even better.

Fluorocarbon Leader Line 20lb β€” 50yd

Nearly invisible fluorocarbon for leader material in Blue Heron Bridge's gin-clear water. Permit have excellent eyesight β€” dropping to 20lb fluorocarbon can be the difference between hookups and refusals.

Clear water + leader-shy permit = always use quality fluorocarbon. Never cut corners here.

Tides & Timing β€” The Palm Beach Cheat Code

The Golden Rule

Palm Beach has moderate tides (2–3 feet) that drive both inshore and nearshore fishing. Blue Heron Bridge is entirely tide-dependent β€” permit fishing peaks on the incoming tide and first two hours of the outgoing. Jupiter Inlet produces snook on falling tides. The offshore Gulf Stream fishing is largely tide-independent, driven more by current edges and water temperature than local tides.

Incoming Tide

Blue Heron Bridge comes alive β€” permit, snook, and tarpon push through the opening to feed on the Lake Worth flats. Best time to be at the bridge.

High Tide

Snook spread out into structure on the ICW. Jupiter Inlet fish move off the inlet edges. Good time to work crab baits tight to bridges.

Outgoing Tide

Jupiter Inlet and Lake Worth Inlet produce excellent snook on outgoing tide. Baitfish pour out of the lagoon and snook stack at the mouth.

Low Tide

Permit visible on flats near Blue Heron Bridge. Snook concentrate in deeper channel cuts. Good time for sight-fishing in shallow areas.

Top Spots by Season

Winter (Nov–Feb)

The greatest sailfish season in the world. Head offshore to the Gulf Stream β€” sometimes just 1–2 miles out. Permit at Blue Heron Bridge remain active. Snook at Jupiter Inlet on warm winter days.

Spring (Mar–May)

Cobia beach run β€” walk Jupiter and Palm Beach beaches and sight-cast to cruising fish. Tarpon migration begins. Snook staging at inlets. Sailfish tapering off as water warms.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Night snook at Jupiter Inlet under lights. Permit at Blue Heron Bridge year-round. Offshore wahoo and mahi on Gulf Stream weed lines. Morning fishing before heat sets in.

Fall (Sep–Oct)

Wahoo season builds on the Gulf Stream. Snook active again at Jupiter and Lake Worth inlets. Permit still visible at Blue Heron Bridge. Sailfish season starts to pick up by October.
